Cefuroxime axetil is an oral prodrug of cefuroxime. After administration, cefuroxime is released and produces bactericidal activity by inhibiting bacterial cell-wall synthesis. It is stable against many bacterial beta-lactamases.
CEFTUM 500 is intended for the systemic treatment of bacterial infections caused by microorganisms susceptible to cefuroxime.

CEFTUM is indicated for infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including:
Cefuroxime has bactericidal activity by inhibiting bacterial cell-wall synthesis. It should be used only when a bacterial infection susceptible to cefuroxime is suspected or confirmed.
CEFTUM should be taken orally after food because administration after a meal improves absorption of cefuroxime axetil. The dose and duration of treatment depend on the type and severity of the infection, age, body weight, and kidney function. Treatment commonly lasts 5–10 days, but the exact regimen must be determined by a healthcare professional. Tablets should be swallowed whole and should not be chewed; this formulation may be unsuitable for children or patients unable to swallow whole tablets.
