NETMICIN-300 contains netilmicin, a semisynthetic aminoglycoside antibiotic. It produces a bactericidal effect by binding to bacterial ribosomes and interfering with the synthesis of proteins required for bacterial survival. This inhibits bacterial growth and leads to the death of susceptible microorganisms.
Netilmicin is used for serious bacterial infections when systemic antibacterial treatment is required.
The medication may be used for:
Netilmicin demonstrates activity against a range of Gram-negative bacteria. Laboratory studies have demonstrated activity against various Enterobacteriaceae, Klebsiella, Serratia, and some strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, including certain isolates resistant to other aminoglycosides.
Clinical studies have also evaluated netilmicin in respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin, and soft-tissue infections. In a randomized clinical trial involving hospitalized patients, netilmicin demonstrated clinical efficacy in these infections, with bacterial eradication achieved in a substantial proportion of patients.
Earlier clinical studies evaluated the drug in serious infections including bacteremia, pulmonary infections, urinary tract infections, and soft-tissue infections. These studies supported its antibacterial activity while also demonstrating the importance of monitoring renal function and potential toxicities associated with aminoglycosides.
As with other aminoglycosides, netilmicin may cause nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity. Medical supervision is therefore required during systemic treatment, and renal function and, when appropriate, serum drug concentrations may need to be monitored during prolonged therapy or in patients with risk factors.
The medication is used for the treatment of serious bacterial infections caused by microorganisms susceptible to netilmicin. It may be used for urinary tract, respiratory tract, skin, and soft-tissue infections, as well as certain systemic infections and bacteremia.
Netilmicin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. This disrupts the production of essential bacterial proteins and produces a bactericidal effect.
Identification of the causative organism and antimicrobial susceptibility testing may be appropriate before treatment, particularly in severe infections or when antimicrobial resistance is suspected.
NETMICIN-300 is administered parenterally, either intramuscularly or intravenously, according to the physician's prescription. The dose and duration of treatment are individualized according to the type and severity of infection, body weight, age, and renal function. During systemic treatment, healthcare professionals may monitor renal function and, when appropriate, serum netilmicin concentrations. Self-administration or modification of the prescribed dosage is not recommended.
Side Effects
Aminoglycosides are associated with potential renal and auditory toxicity. The risk may increase with high cumulative doses, prolonged treatment, renal impairment, and concomitant use of other nephrotoxic or ototoxic medications.
