Bleomycin is an antitumour antibiotic that induces DNA strand breaks, leading to cancer cell apoptosis.

Recommended for:

Combination chemotherapy regimens
Hodgkin’s lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphomas
Germ cell tumours, especially testicular cancer
Cervical and head & neck cancer
Malignant pleural effusion (as sclerosing agent)

Hodgkin’s lymphoma
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma
Testicular carcinoma
Cervical cancer
Head and neck tumours
Malignant pleural effusion

Administered intravenously, intramuscularly, subcutaneously or intrapleurally under hospital supervision. Dose and schedule are tailored by an oncologist depending on cancer type and patient condition.

Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity to bleomycin
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Severe pulmonary impairment
Severe renal or hepatic dysfunction
Paediatric use without clinical justification

Side Effects:

Pulmonary fibrosis, interstitial pneumonitis
Nausea, vomiting, appetite loss
Fever and chills
Skin changes: rash, hyperpigmentation, dryness
Rare: bone marrow suppression
Allergic reactions
