Tamoxifen belongs to the class of selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs). In breast tissue, it binds to estrogen receptors and prevents estrogen from stimulating susceptible tumor cells. This can inhibit or slow the growth of certain hormone-dependent breast cancers.

Tamoxifen is primarily used to treat certain types of breast cancer, particularly hormone receptor-positive disease. It works by reducing the stimulatory effect of estrogen on susceptible breast tumor tissue.
In selected clinical situations, tamoxifen may also be used to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer in women at increased risk. The indication, treatment duration and regimen must be determined by a physician.
The tablets are taken orally with water. Tamoxifen should be used strictly according to the treatment regimen prescribed by the physician. The dosage and duration of treatment depend on the diagnosis, disease stage, hormone receptor status and other individual clinical factors.
