How it works:
 Tenofovir is a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI). It blocks the activity of viral DNA polymerase, preventing replication of HIV and Hepatitis B viruses.

Recommended for:

  • Patients diagnosed with HIV (as part of combination ART)

  • Individuals with chronic hepatitis B

  • HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in at-risk individuals (under medical supervision)

Take orally once daily, with or without food, as directed by a physician. Often used in combination with other antiretroviral agents.

Contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity to Tenofovir or any component of the formulation

  • Severe renal impairment

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding (unless medically justified)

  • Paediatric use unless approved by physician

Side effects:

  • Nausea, diarrhoea

  • Fatigue

  • Renal dysfunction

  • Reduced bone mineral density

  • Skin rash, itching
