How it works:
Tenofovir alafenamide is a prodrug activated inside infected cells
Inhibits reverse transcriptase of HIV and HBV
Lower systemic exposure reduces renal and bone side effects
Effective at low dose
Recommended for:
Adults with HIV-1 infection (as part of combination ART)
Patients with chronic hepatitis B
Individuals at risk of kidney or bone toxicity
To be prescribed by an infectious disease specialist or hepatologist

Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to any component of the drug
Age below 18
Pregnancy and breastfeeding without medical advice
Severe liver dysfunction
Side effects:
Headache
Fatigue
Diarrhoea
Elevated creatinine levels
Reduced bone mineral density (rarely)
