LEVERA XR-500 contains levetiracetam, an antiepileptic medication used to reduce the frequency and severity of epileptic seizures. Its precise anticonvulsant mechanism is not completely understood. Levetiracetam is known to bind to synaptic vesicle protein SV2A, which is involved in neurotransmitter release and neuronal signaling, helping regulate abnormal neuronal activity.
Recommended for patients:
Levetiracetam has been extensively studied in clinical trials involving different types of epilepsy. Randomized controlled studies have demonstrated that adjunctive levetiracetam therapy can significantly reduce seizure frequency in patients with focal epilepsy compared with placebo. Clinical trials have also supported its efficacy as adjunctive therapy for myoclonic seizures associated with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy and for primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures.
An important pharmacological feature of levetiracetam is its relatively low potential for drug interactions. It is not extensively metabolized through the hepatic CYP450 enzyme system, which allows it to be used as part of combination antiepileptic treatment in many patients.
LEVERA XR-500 is used for the treatment of epilepsy and control of specific types of epileptic seizures. Levetiracetam may be used as adjunctive therapy for focal seizures, myoclonic seizures associated with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy, and primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures.
The medication helps reduce abnormal neuronal excitability and decreases the likelihood of epileptic discharges. The appropriate treatment regimen depends on seizure type, patient age, underlying medical conditions, and other antiepileptic medications being used.
The medication is taken orally according to the healthcare professional's instructions. Extended-release tablets should be swallowed whole with sufficient water and should not be chewed, crushed, or broken. Dosage and treatment duration are individualized. Levetiracetam should generally not be discontinued abruptly because sudden withdrawal may increase the risk of increased seizure frequency.
Side Effects
Patients should seek medical attention if significant mood changes, unusual behavior, severe drowsiness, or other serious symptoms develop.
