Hypertonic sodium chloride is widely used in ophthalmology as an osmotic treatment for corneal edema. Clinical research involving hypertonic ophthalmic sodium chloride solutions and ointments indicates that increasing the osmotic concentration at the ocular surface can promote removal of excess fluid from the cornea and reduce corneal swelling.
Hypertonic ophthalmic preparations have been studied particularly in conditions involving impaired corneal endothelial function, including some cases of Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy, as well as postoperative corneal edema. Temporary blurred vision may occur after application; patients should wait until vision becomes clear before driving or operating machinery.
