VIRSON ophthalmic gel contains ganciclovir, an antiviral medication intended for topical ophthalmic use. After activation within infected cells, ganciclovir inhibits viral DNA synthesis, thereby interfering with viral replication. This helps control the infection and supports healing of affected corneal tissue.

The efficacy of 0.15% ophthalmic ganciclovir has been evaluated in several randomized clinical studies. Multicenter trials compared the gel with 3% acyclovir ophthalmic ointment in superficial herpes simplex keratitis. In one study, healing rates were 85% and 83% with 0.15% ganciclovir compared with 72% and 71% with acyclovir. Although the differences were not statistically significant, the results favored ganciclovir numerically and the gel demonstrated good local tolerability. (PubMed)
Further clinical studies and reviews reported that 0.15% ganciclovir ophthalmic gel was at least as effective as 3% acyclovir ointment for acute herpetic keratitis. Several studies also reported lower rates of certain local discomfort symptoms and blurred vision with ganciclovir compared with acyclovir ointment. (PubMed)

VIRSON ophthalmic gel is used for the topical treatment of acute herpetic keratitis, particularly superficial dendritic corneal lesions caused by herpes simplex virus. Use for other viral eye conditions should be determined by an ophthalmologist because the appropriate antiviral treatment depends on the type of infection and the depth and location of ocular involvement.
The gel is applied topically into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye according to the ophthalmologist's instructions. Wash your hands before application, avoid touching the tip of the tube to the eye or other surfaces, and gently place the prescribed amount of gel inside the lower eyelid. The frequency and duration of treatment are determined by the physician according to the type and severity of the infection.
Side Effects
Local adverse effects are generally transient. Patients should contact an ophthalmologist if severe or persistent irritation, worsening pain, or deterioration of vision occurs.
