Mifepristone is a steroidal antiprogestogen that blocks progesterone, a hormone essential for pregnancy continuation. When used with misoprostol, it induces the expulsion of the embryo.
Recommended for:
Women up to 63 days of gestation
Non-surgical early abortion under medical care
Patients who prefer medical over surgical intervention
Women with contraindications to surgery
Termination of intrauterine pregnancy up to 63 days of gestation.
Taken orally as a single dose under medical supervision. Typically followed by a prostaglandin (misoprostol) after 24–48 hours. Follow-up is required to confirm complete abortion.
Not suitable for ectopic pregnancy, bleeding disorders, adrenal failure, or in those on corticosteroid therapy. Possible side effects: bleeding, cramping, nausea, diarrhoea, dizziness, fatigue.
